Book a Flight
Hunt around for the best prices. Try and be flexible with your dates. Make sure you book flights that you can change if you need to at a latter point without being hit with a large penalty charge.
We recommend checking out the following sites if you are looking for deals on flights to Australia and flights to Sydney:
Lastminute
Cheap flights to and around Australia
Travel Insurance
A key point on your travel check list should be insurance. Especially if you are planning to do some extreme activities when travelling New Zealand. It is low cost and offers great peace of mind. Compare the price for an annual policy to just taking out cover for the duration of your trip. It’ll probably work out cheaper especially as there is a good chance you will catch the travel bug and be off travelling again before the year is out!

The Right Equipment
Splash out on a decent backpack. Believe us - it will save you serious back ache when you are halfway round the world!
The best deals are always online nowadays so check BagsBuy who offer a big selection of backpacks at great prices.
Another must is a sturdy pair of hiking boots for climbing the Fox Glacier or for long days out trekking. Kathmandu have a great selection at good prices.
An essential purchase on your backpacking travel list is a First Aid Kit... Ensure you always have a good supply of plasters to guard against the inevitable blister or the cut you suffer whilst stumbling out of a bar after one too many late night drinks! Better to be prepared. There are some great first aid kits on the market that will not take up much room in your backpack. A decision we guarantee you will be happy you made at some point during your trip.
Online photo storage
Everybody has fancy digital camera nowadays so you can capture those once in a lifetime picture opportunities. When travelling it is vital to have a secure storage space for all your images so Lazy Shark have created a free Online Photo Album to all our members. In addition you can also add these images into your free Online Travel Journal to e-mail back home. You just need to become a Lazy Shark member which is also free!
Communication
Stay in touch with those at home without spending a fortune on the phone. You can get good international rates using a number of phone cards or if you have a more permanent base then download Skype for incredibly cheap call rates around the world. Sun Tan Cream
As the Aussies put it ‘Slip, Slap, Slop’. Don’t ruin your travels by getting burnt. Get along to your nearest pharmacy or supermarket to get some good quality suncream. Equip yourself with a couple of different factors so your body can get used to any hotter climates that you may be travelling, especially for those of you backpacking Australia and venturing to the baking heat of Uluru!
