It would be a mistake to miss out on Wanganui during your travels as it is an attractive city with a great mix of Maori and European influences. Whether it is bushwalking, culture, history or outdoor activities Wanganui is perfect. The Wanganui River is fantastic for kayaking, canoeing and jet boating. The river takes you from Mount Tongariro right up to Wanganui where there are excellent examples of fine art. Those that love surfing there are some magnificent stretches of beach. If you have the urge to milk a cow or sheer a sheep then head over to the farms in the Rangitikei district. The Wanganui accommodation is fairly sparse but there are a few comfortable Wanganui hostels to enjoy and a better choice of nightlife to keep you entertained.
