Penguins are a great reason to visit Oamaru. At sunset take a stroll down to Oamaru Harbour where you can view small blue and yellow-eyed penguins waddle ashore to get comfortable for the night. Harbour-Tyne Street is particularly attractive offering some great shopping spots with plenty of Oamaru restaurants to choose from. If cheese is your thing then a trip to the Whitestone Cheese Company is a must, where you can sample some of New Zealand's best handmade cheese. It is certainly worth taking the trip south to see the ancient Moeraki Boulders which resemble huge marbles scattered along the beach.
