Established as a penal colony in 1821 it is now a popular resort with its sandy beaches and fine climate. Port Macquarie is also well known for its koala population and is home to the Billabong Koala Park and the Koala Preservation Society's Koala Hospital which cares for injured koalas.

Where to next

Heading North - Head further up the coast to Coffs Harbour. Its sandy beaches and man made harbour make it an idyllic destination. Take your pick of adrenalin activities to do - dolphin watching, sea kayaking and sky diving are a few options. Nymboida River offers some of the best white water rafting in Australia. Also make sure you also check out the giant man-made banana — comical!

Heading South - A short drive down the East Coast and inland is Barrington Tops. The National Park, declared a World Heritage Area in 1986 is one of the highest points in Australia. Its rugged landscape with rainforests, gorges, cliffs and waterfalls makes it a hiker’s paradise to explore. A favourite weekend break for Sydneysiders there is plenty of camping facilities to choose from. Amongst the activities worth doing are a 4WD tour into the heart of the wild forests and white water rafting in Dungog or Gloucester.
