History
Barrington Tops National Park is thought to be an extinct volcano and the mountain ranges are composed of sedimentary rocks with a granite top. It is estimated that the rocks are around 300 to 400 million years old.

Where to next
Heading North - Head back out to the coast to Port Macquarie. Established as a penal colony in 1821 it is now a popular resort with its sandy beaches and fine climate. Not the most happening of places there is still plenty to do if you love the water. Choose from surfing, scuba diving, waterskiing, and dolphin and whale watching. If you want to keep your feet dry then check out the Billabong Koala Park where you can pat a koala and see the spider monkeys being fed.
Heading South - A short drive down the East Coast is Port Stephens - Dolphin capital of Australia. With its 26 beaches, numerous bays, lakes and national parks it is the perfect place to relax and unwind for a few days. Make sure you take in the wildlife including the annual humpback whale migration if you are lucky enough to be there between May and June and September and November.
